27843 - Literary Genres in English Literature I

Syllabus

The course is structured into eight units. After an introduction to the theatrical phenomenon, the themes will focus on the most salient aspects of drama in English from the Renaissance, following a chronological order.

1. Introduction.

Compulsory readings:

Aristotle, Poetics (selection)

Erving Goffman, The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (selection).

2. Renaissance drama.

Compulsory readings:

Christopher Marlowe, Doctor Faustus

Selections from Thomas Kyd, The Spanish Tragedy; Ben Jonson, Volpone; John Webster, The Duchess of Malfi.

3. Shakespeare: History plays

Compulsory Readings:

King Henry V

Selections from  King Richard III

4. Shakespeare: Comedies and tragicomedies

Compulsory Readings:

The Tempest

Selections from Twelfth Night and As You Like It

5. Shakespeare: Tragedies

Compulsory readings:

Macbeth

Selections from Julius Caesar, Hamlet and Othello

6. Theatrical genres of the Restoration and the 18th century

Compulsory readings:

Selections from John Milton, Samson Agonistes; John Dryden, An Essay of Dramatic Poesy; William Congreve, The Way of the World; Oliver Goldsmith, She Stoops to Conquer.

7. Realistic drama and poetic drama: 19th to 20th century

Compulsory readings:

Selections from Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest; G. B. Shaw, Pygmalion; J. B. Priestley, Time and the Conways.

8. Drama since 1950. The 'Angry Young Men', Theatre of the Absurd, experimental and postmodern drama.

Compulsory readings:

Samuel Beckett, Krapp's Last Tape; Edward Bond, Passion

Selection from John Osborne, Look Back in Anger; Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; Caryl Churchill, Top Girls; Brian Friel, Translations.
